Benefits of Registering |
Registering your Domain Names is important, even if you have no web site. Why? Because it;
- secures your identity online - your image, identity and reputation.
- protects your brands online in both a local and global space
- places you in good position if you wish to 'go on-line' in the future. If you don't secure your domain name now you may reduce your options. This is also seen as the first step for any business intent on establishing or building a web presence.
- allows you to get your own company e-mail - email addresses can derive from a domain name - if you don't own the domain name you can't get email addresses in your business name. Eg. jane.smith@yourcompany.com.au
- avoids the threat of cybersquatters who may take your name for their own purposes.

Choosing a Domain Name |
When you are choosing your Domain Name, the following ideas should be considered.
- A domain name is an alphanumeric string of characters between 3 to 67 characters in length. It can contain letters or numbers only, with the exception of the special character - (called dash or minus sign), but this character CANNOT be the first or the last character of your domain name. There is no difference between upper and lower case letters.
- Domain names can have many uses, both for individuals or businesses. An easy to remember domain name related to you and your business can make a big difference.
- There must be quite a few people out there, who share their business. That is why registering a good domain name for your business, as quickly as possible, can be very important.
- There are a few important points to remember when choosing a domain name. Firstly, the name has to be as short as possible, this way it will be easier to remember and there will be a reduced chance that, a potential visitor might make a spelling mistake. Second, the name must reflect you or your business.
- Consider the extension you will use with your domain name. The most popular top level domain extensions are .com(commercial) and .net(network). These extensions are used by many companies and individuals, who require a global presence. The extension .org(organisation) never caught on with the public and is used mainly by government departments and charities. If you live in Australia, you should consider .com.au(Australian Commercial). Many Australian consumers prefer to do business with web sites ending with .com.au
